The Six Nation Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy has a large city presence, including Mohawk citizens who came in the early decades of the 20th century as the famed and fearless “Iron Walkers” who built the skyscrapers that give the city its world-famous skyline. Among the city’s Puerto Rican residents, many are descended from Taino peoples who, as with all indigenous peoples, refused to disappear in the face of settler government’s attempts to eliminate them."
