The Employment & Training Program is a 'people oriented' program that encourages a goal of self-sufficiency through coordinated supportive services, training, and job placement assistance for American Indians, Alaskan Natives, and Native Hawaiians. This community support program is specifically sensitive to the needs of Native individuals in helping them to obtain and maintain meaningful employment.
WIA Available Services
- Job preparation and job search assistance
- Referral to partner agencies and other career centers for services
- Job referrals and employment incentives
- Services for performing artists (includes career stipends and employment incentives)
- Educational services (includes basic allowance, tuition assistance, etc.)
- Short-term paid work experience training and internships (to build job skills)
- Job announcements
- Scholarships, internships and fellowships
- Summer Youth Program (for reservation youth)
WIA Eligibility Requirements
The following information and documentation must be provided by applicants in order to complete WIA intake and determine program eligibility. (NOTE: This information is needed for WIA program eligibility only, based on requirements from our funding source. Other in-house programs may require less documentation.)
- Indian I.D. (status card, tribal council letter, birth certificate, baptismal record, parent birth/death certificate, etc.)
- Birth Date Verification (birth certificate, official document showing birth date, etc.)
- Social Security Verification (SS card or SS# on another official document)
- Income Verification (W-2, tax return, last pay stub, public assistance or unemployment letter, etc.)
- Address Verification (apartment lease, monthly bill, driver's license, etc.)
- Selective Service Verification (U.S. and Canadian males, ages 18-25)
- Any State Issued Photo I.D. (Passport, P.A. card, driver's/non-driver's license, etc.)
Programs
WEX (Work Experience)
Part time or full time training which combines on-the-job training with skill upgrading and related instruction. Training is at various worksites and includes:
- 3 to 6 months of paid training (evaluate progress)
- Clothing allowance (if needed)
- Transportation assistance and other supportive services
- Hourly wage at or slightly above minimum wage
- Employment incentives for up to one year once employment is obtained
WEX customers are classified as "trainees" or temporary employees, and are not eligible for employment benefits (such as sick leave, vacation time and health insurance). Training includes on-going evaluations of program effectiveness and work performance. WEX customers are required to do job search and actively seek employment as part of this program.
WIA will allow on-going (WEX/CRT) training for F/T students. Job training must be related to student’s area of study.

CRT (Classroom Training)
Financial assistance for full-time students attending an accredited training facility includes:
- Basic allowance
- Tuition assistance
- Monthly transportation assistance
- Email notification of scholarships/internships, etc.
- Paid internships
- Graduation bonus
- Financial assistance for graduate students
CRT awards are determined case-by-case based on customer's needs assessment and available program funds after all other financial aid, grants, scholarships, and loans have been applied. (Limited assistance is also available for part-time students - less than 12 credit hours.)
TA/SS (Training Assistance/Supportive Services)
Practical and financial assistance for newly employed customers and/or customers seeking employment. Awards are based upon determination of customer's needs assessment and available program funds, that include (but are not limited to):
- Job search assistance
- Transportation assistance
- Clothing allowance (when needed for employment)
- Career guidance
- Employment-related fees, certification, licensing, background check, special equipment, physical exam, etc.
- Employment incentives and follow-up services for newly employed customers (includes cash awards and transportation for up to one year)
- Use of computers, copiers, phones, fax, other in-house equipment and supplies.
- Performing arts services (awarded to customers who are seriously pursuing a career in the arts):
- Stipends for training and career needs (such as lessons, classes, sheet music, scripts, photos, supplies, costumes, etc.)
- Employment incentives - designed specifically for working artists. Includes transportation assistance and cash incentives for performers who work consistently.
SYP (Summer Youth Program)
SYP is a 7- to 9-week, real world, work-based training program with incentives to motivate reservation youth and prepare them for entering the labor market. SYP provides weekly stipends and program end bonuses for 14 to 19 year old participants who work with employers 16 to 20 hours, 4 days a week.

The program is specifically designed to:
- Teach marketable skills
- Develop good work habits
- Instill positive work ethics
- Develop personal skills
- Provide actual work experience
- Foster leadership skills
- Enhance cultural pride
- Reduce high school dropout
- Encourage higher education
