Lisa Mayo

Kuna, Rappahannock

 

Lisa studied at the New York School of Music and is a classically trained mezzo soprano. She also studied with Uta Hagen, Robert Lewis and Walt Witcover, as well as Charles Nelson Riley for Musical Comedy. She is a founding member of Spiderwoman Theater and with them has written and performed in at least 20 original works for the theatre. She has toured to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, China and throughout Canada and the United States.

 

She has created one-woman shows, The Pause That Refreshes, My Sister Ate Dirt and most recently, Among the Living. She was a featured actor in the Conway and Pratt production of A Woman’s Work is Never Done. She has taught theatre crafts and acting to young people as part of the Minnesota Native American AIDS Task Force and has directed the Native American Actor’s Showcase at the American Indian Community House (AICH). Among the Living, a part of Spiderwoman Theater’s Elder Project, is being included in a new film about Alzheimer’s disease, produced by Loose Change Productions.  She served on the Board of Directors of The American Indian Community House from 1998-2007.

 

She has received an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Miami University in Ohio and as part of Spiderwoman Theater, was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Women’s Caucus for Art.
